'This boy is cracking up'...

It's funny, y'know. When I created my own blog page, I thought I'd have far more to say than I actually do. Hey, at least that first entry allowed me to exorcise a bunch of personal demons and go into this new year with a clean slate, figuratively speaking. As far as I know, the people most likely to be put out by that last entry haven't seen it yet, but my opinions and feelings very much still stand, especially as those people have recently taken it upon themselves to poke fun at the Rolling Stones - namely Mick Jagger and one [quote] Keith Wood. <Cough> Professional, huh?

My (hopefully) last word on the subject leads me to a point a friend of mine made recently. Apparently, I don't like much. No, actually, make that anything. I decided this week to make more of a conscious effort to make that not the case. I've decided I really like the version of 'Old Town' [Lynott/Bain] from The Corrs 'Unplugged' album.

This seems quite relevant right now, as we've just had the 19th anniversary of Phil Lynott's passing. I always thought I didn't like cover versions of Thin Lizzy songs, mainly based on the fact that Bon Jovi's version of 'The Boys Are Back In Town' is just a bit naff (at best) - after all, Lynott's always distinctive delivery of often complex vocal lines was a huge part of the band's sound. However, between the aforementioned [and somewhat unexpected] great version of 'Old Town' by The Corrs (okay, okay - it's from one of Phil's solo albums, so not technically a Lizzy song, but the point is essentially the same) and the unrecognisable version of 'Dancing In The Moonlight' by The Smashing Pumpkins (turned into an acoustic ballad), I'm willing to change my mind.

I think I'll dig out my copy of 'Black Rose (A Rock Legend) later.

[Phil Lynott: 20.8.49 - 4.1.86]
