Sing To You In Perfect Tense
On Friday 22nd April, I made the trip into London to see Kino – a new band featuring members of Marillion, It Bites, Porcupine Tree (at least on their recorded output) and Arena. While not being a great fan of the Kino album, I thought it was more than fair that I should go along and check out the gig; after all, music can take on a whole different feel when seen in a live setting. Sure, the Kino CD is okay, but I’m still left feeling it’s full of potentially great 4 minute pop-rock tunes spoiled by unnecessary prog-rock bits.
I bumped into Pete T before the gig and he mentioned the support band were ‘a little bit like Tool’. No kidding. If they were a little bit like Tool, I wonder what a band a lot like Tool might sound like if they weren’t actually Tool. It was a pleasure to bump into the ever wonderful Lucy J too.
The Kino set did not disappoint. While I’m not a great fan of the CD, the live set worked well and most of the album got an airing. The atmosphere, I feel, could have been better, but then I was sat in an almost empty bar upstairs with a few friends (it was from this vantage point I witnessed an extremely wobbly lighting rig – looked very unsafe to me). While I enjoyed most of the Kino material, it was the inclusion of two It Bites songs which made the evening for me. I remember the band from back in the day, but never got around to buying any of their albums – something I hope to rectify soon.I’d like to say more, but all things considered, the evening seemed to pass fairly quickly. It was enjoyable, I can tell you that, but if it’s made one lasting impression, it’s that I hope It Bites play live shows again one day (I had heard a while back there was a reformation in the works, but I’m wondering what’s happening there now John Beck is busy doing other things).
For those of you who’ve bothered reading this – and I know who you are – I’m just sorry it wasn’t more in depth. Still, a few random thoughts are better than none at all.
And despite strong anti-prog claims from some quarters: Kino - it’s prog. If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s a duck.
